This is what William's bio on Find a Grave says:

William moved his family from Ohio to McCoupin County, Illinois in about 1864, probably shortly after marrying Mary Ann Nichols. In 1871 they moved once more, this time to McPherson County Kansas. Here he homesteaded a quarter section of land. William moved to Portland, Kansas in his later years and lived with his son Leander and his family. Leander had a farm in the area, then sold it and moved into the town of Portland. While there he owned the county grocery store for a period of time. The last time William is shown to have owned land in McPherson Co was Apr of 1902. Listed in the 1884 McPherson Co list of Patrons as from Jackson Twp, Farmer & Stock Raiser from Pennsylvania settling in McPherson Co in 1876.
