Hugh was probably born in Ireland, although his place of origin hasn't been found, nor have any family members.  He was living in Pennsylvania by 1749.  Hugh and Susannah moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina before 1757 where they lived the rest of their lives.  Hugh's gravestone reads:

Here lies the body of Hugh McCrarey, Deceased, February the 14th Anno Domini 1785, aged 65 years, You lookers on and standers by, As you are now so once was I, As I am now so you must be, Therefore prepare to follow me.
